Sherman "Sherm" Hansen Obituary

Sherman Dwight Hansen, 73, passed away on March 7, 2024, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. "Sherm" was born July 7, 1950, in Pocatello, Idaho.

Sherm graduated from Malad High School in 1968 and entered the Army shortly after, serving proudly during the Vietnam war.

During a combat operation at Ripcord, his company came under fire, forcing them off the hillside and seeking cover at the base of the slope. Although he was wounded, Private First Class Hansen helped in the treatment of his fellow soldiers and provided suppressive fire while the soldiers retook the hilltop. As a result of his actions, Sherman was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for heroism, and the Purple Heart from injuries sustained. During his service, he also received the Bronze Service Star, National Defense Service Medal, and Combat Infantryman Badge.

In his early adulthood, Sherman farmed in Pocatello Valley near Malad Idaho, then later worked 20+ years as a mail carrier for the US postal service in Pocatello, until he retired in 2016. Sherman was an avid golfer and outdoorsman and spent much time creating treasured memories for all who enjoyed these activities with him.

Sherman was preceded in death by his mother, Berniece Smith Hansen Florke and his father, Darrel Hansen.  He is survived by his two daughters Angela (Kent) Byington, and Robyn (Ryan) Ashcraft, his brothers Gary (Genene) Hansen, Terry (Kathy) Hansen and sister Gayle (John) Henderson, nine amazing grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life and military funeral honors will be held at a later date in Boise, Idaho.
