Robert Elmer Shaw, beloved husband, father, brother, son, grandfather & great grandfather, passed away Tuesday June 5, 2018 at age 89. He was a kind and gentle friend to all who knew him, always seeing the positive.
Robert was born February 2,1929 the son of George Elmer Shaw and Almira McNeil Shaw in Salt Lake City, Utah, but raised by his step-father, Arthur William Kerswell. They moved to Idaho in 1935, where he attended school. He worked many jobs as a kid, working along side his father in many of those.
In the summer of 1945, Robert left home and joined the U.S. Navy for a two year enlistment during World War II. After boot camp, he was deployed and sent to Pearl Harbor, assigned on the Destroyer, Newman K. Perry. He participated in atomic bomb testing while stationed in Hawaii. He finished his service in December of 1947. He also served in the Idaho National Guard.
During the summer of 1949, he met a sweet young lady named Betty Haderlie. After a short courtship, he married his soul mate on November 14,1950. They started their lives together in Rexburg. In the fall of 1953, they moved to St. Anthony, and later made their home in Ucon. Robert had a job working as an engineer for the Idaho Highway Department, where he oversaw numerous road and bridge projects across the state including, John Holes Bridge, parts of Interstate 15, & the Lorenzo Bridge. After completing 40 years of service, Robert retired in May of 1990.
Robert and Betty were blessed with three children Cynthia, Cheryl, and Rodney. As a family they shared many fun times together including camping almost every weekend & helping build their home in Ucon. Family was very important to Robert. He tried coming to all birthdays, weddings, graduations, and any momentous occasion that was happening.
Robert loved wood working projects and made many amazing pieces for his family. Other hobbies that Robert loved were playing cards, yard work, reading, hunting, and watching basketball.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in many callings.
Robert is survived by his children, daughter, Cynthia (Jan) Smith of Idaho Falls; daughter, Cheryl (Kent) Hansen of Idaho Falls; son, Rodney (Camille) Shaw of Shelley; brothers, Jack and Terry Kerswell; sisters, Karen Hansen, Julia Powell, and Sandra Bott; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty, his parents, brother Keith, sisters Fern, Jesse, and Loretta, granddaughter, Alexa Rae Shaw, and great-granddaughter, Lanieanne Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2018, at the Ucon LDS Monument Ward, 10854 North 41 East, with Ty Smith officiating. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 South Ammon Road, and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Ucon Cemetery.
