Lawrence "Larry" Conrad Obituary

Larry Conrad was born on August 1, 1949 in Cape Girardeau, MO to Charles & Marian Conrad. At the age of 5 he moved to Reno, NV, where he lived until he graduated from high school.

Some of his favorite memories are from the summers his family spent at Lake Tahoe, where his father managed the 4H camp. While growing up in Reno, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad and brother and spent many hours at Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake water skiing.  He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern States mission. When he returned, he went to Ricks College and as Captain Hook he met his little lost (boy) Kathy Couch. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 14, 1971. He completed his law enforcement degree at Weber State and began his career with the Weber County Sheriff’s department. In April of 1975 they moved to American Falls, Idaho, where he worked for the American Falls Police Department until August of 1981. He learned a lot and enjoyed working with the officers and his police chief Walt Miller, known to the kids as Uncle Walt. In August of 1981 with a desire to advance his career the family left American Falls and moved to Kirkland, WA, where he  worked for the Redmond Police Department. His career in Redmond included working under cover, swat training with his son Daris as the getaway driver, a firearms instructor, working with the canine team as a suspect for canine training, as a detective and  a member of the swat team. While as a busy police officer and father he went back to school and got his masters degree. He retired from the police force in 2004.

Another important part of Larry’s life was working with the Boy Scouts of America. He served in many different capacities from scoutmaster to wood badge director. One of his favorite skills to teach and share was Dutch oven cooking. Following many years of service he was presented the Silver Beaver award which is a council level distinguished service award. He always said as a police officer he saw the dark side of life but working in scouting he was able to see the good in people and influence young men. He loved long motorcycle trips, camping, hiking, fishing, hunting and spending time outdoors with his family. He was most happy when he was teaching his kids the lessons he learned from his own dad.
After retirement he started a new hobby of woodworking and loved making Christmas ornaments and other useful items for friends and families. He loved volunteering with the local woodchuck group. In April of 2020, after living in Kirkland for 37 years Larry and Kathy moved to Reno, NV, to care for his mother.

His greatest joys were his kids and grandkids. He loved his granddaughters and was always willing to let them paint his toenails. He loved to take his grandsons fishing, shooting and just spending time supporting them in whatever they were involved in including watching them play many different sports.

He passed away on Monday October 19, 2020.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Conrad; his children, Tiffiny Conrad, Tammy (Scott) Wallis, Nathan (Shae) Conrad, Daris (Rachael) Conrad, Hyrum Conrad; his 11 grandchildren; his sister, Dr. Rae Lyn (Reg) Burke; his brother, Bryon (Teri) Conrad; and his mother, Marian Conrad.

He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Conrad; and 1 granddaughter, Finley.

The last text we received from dad said “I want you all to know your mother and I are very proud of each and every one of you. Dad”. At first glance dad was rough and tough on the outside, but anyone who took the time to know him soon found out he was a big teddy bear. He will be missed by many!
