The family of Jerry Johnson announce his passing on November 15, 2023, at the age of 83, in Rigby, Idaho. He passed peacefully with his only daughter by his side. During his final days, time was spent with his grandchildren and a lifelong friend.
Jerry was born August 15, 1940, to Hairl and Darlene Johnson in Blackfoot, Idaho. He was raised and attended schools there, and where he built his life. Through Jerry's formative years his work ethic was cultivated and grew stronger when he was taught the butchering business from his father. This trade helped provide for the family for many years while they owned and operated Johnson's Meat Packing Plant and Johnson's Grocery in Blackfoot. In the early 70's Jerry bought the Ririe Bar and successfully owned it for over 30 years. During those decades he and others made long lasting memories. After many years of hard work and good times, he sold the bar to retire. He spent much of retirement riding, golfing, hunting, maintaining his trailer park, and traveling with family throughout the region.
From an early childhood Jerry showed a love for sports, adventures, and many games. He loved all animals and bore a particular fondness for Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. He had done many things during his lifetime throughout SE Idaho, including: water skiing, competing in local bowling tournaments, dart leagues, and with Mike's Paint as a baseball catcher. He and his daughter had season tickets for the IF Chukars as well. He sponsored and participated in pool leagues with family. Riding his Goldwing and playing golf was a daily occurrence if weather permitted. He was a trap shooter in Idaho Falls and Jackson, WY. During goose and duck hunting season he would set-up in many grain fields to reap the benefits of his patience and determination. This was the same for when he hunted wild game across the region, caught Salmon in the Salmon River or fished for trout in Idaho's rivers and reservoirs. Winter brought the opportunity to ice fish on Palisades or ride snow machines in Island Park. He never turned down a game of poker or cribbage, nor dominos with his grandkids.
In 1964, Jerry met and married Paulettte (Polly) DiViesti. From this union a daughter was born, who was named April. She blessed her parents with three beautiful grandchildren, Stasha, Colter, and Myria. Jerry shared his love and wisdom over the years with his sweet family. Sunday breakfast at many diners is a fond memory they all cherish, and a tradition that will continue through posterity.
Jerry is survived by his daughter, April Summers; 3 grandchildren, Stasha, Colter, and Myria; four great-grandchildren; lifelong friend, Polly; and nephews, Jesse Harris and Dalton Harris.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hairl and Darlene Johnson; sisters, Lavell French
and Linda Harris; brothers, Calvin Johnson and Mac Johnson; and cousin, James (Jimmy) Walker.
To honor his wishes there will be no funeral service.
With deep gratitude the family would like to send a heartfelt "thank you" to the staff at The Wildflower Assisted Living Center in Rigby. Their wonderful care and consideration given to our loved one is very comforting and appreciated.
