Harold Winther Obituary

Harold T. Winther, 91, passed away June 1, 2023, at his home in Iona.

Harold was born July 20, 1931, in Ammon, Idaho, to Thoralf S. and Nora Pugmire Winther. He was the fourth child and only boy born in a family of six girls. He grew up on the family ranch in the mountains at Dehlin, Idaho. His first years of schooling were at a school near the ranch where grades 1 through 8 were taught in one room. He also attended school in Idaho Falls. Harold loved growing up at the ranch. He was a self-taught mechanic which was only one of his many talents.

He served in the Military with the 369th Engineer Division as a heavy equipment operator during the Korean Conflict. He served as President of the Bonneville County Cattleman’s Association and rode with the Iona Posse for a number of years.

Harold married Sharon Byrl Young on July 13, 1956, in Shelley, Idaho. Harold and Sharon were inseparable throughout their married life. “Always together, never apart” was a phrase that truly described them. Together, they owned and operated a successful snowmobile business for twelve years. Harold was an avid snowmobile rider and enjoyed that sport for many years, along with special friends and family members.

The ranch has always been a special place for Harold. He and Sharon took great pride in making it a welcome place for all the many others who came to visit. They developed prime habitat for deer, elk, moose, sage grouse, and sharp tail grouse.

Sharon passed away on October 6, 2015. They had one daughter, Cindy Sharon, who passed away May 22, 1994.

Harold has a large circle of friends and will be greatly missed, along with many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Harold is survived by two sisters, Beverly (Dale) Clayton of Idaho Falls, ID and Noreen Wiesenberger of Pocatello, ID. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon; daughter, Cindy; and four sisters, Lois Herbst, Bernice Dumont, Leona Johnson, and Sharon Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road. The family will meet with friends on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, from 6- 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services.
