Don R. Percival, 76, of Ammon, Idaho, died February 12, 2012, at his home.
Don was born May 19, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, to Roy F. Percival and Effie A. Harris Percival, their only child. He spent the first ten years of his life in Chicago. In August of 1945, the family moved to Rexburg, Idaho, to care for Don’s maternal grandparents. He attended Rexburg schools and graduated from Madison High School in May, 1953.
After graduation, Don worked at Rexburg Food Center and attended Ricks College part-time. On June 10, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Zollinger. He continued to work and attend Ricks College part time. In the fall of 1957, he, Wanda, and their daughter moved to Pocatello, where he attended Idaho State College, graduating in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He worked full-time on a research project at Idaho State until the fall of 1960, when the family, which now included a son, moved to Berkeley, California, where he attended the University of California for one semester.
In February, 1961, the family took up residence in Idaho Falls, where he went to work for the Department of Energy in the Analytical Chemistry Branch of the Radiological and Environmental Sciences Laboratory at what is now the Idaho National Laboratory. He held several positions during his 30-year tenure there and retired in June of 1991.
Don’s hobbies over the years consisted of fishing, hunting, camping, golf, carpentry, and woodworking. He especially enjoyed time spent at Star Valley Ranch Resort near Thayne, Wyoming, and, since 1998, winters spent in Surprise, Arizona. His greatest joy in life was his family, with each member holding a special place in his heart. He greatly enjoyed family get-togethers and following the progress and activities of his grandchildren. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
