Dale Tobias Obituary

Dale Arthur Tobias, 86, of Idaho Falls, passed away November 22, 2021, at his home with family present.

He was born September 14, 1935, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Arthur Walter and Florence DeVries Tobias. He was raised on a farm near Mohrsville, Pennsylvania.

Dale enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1953, spending four years in naval aviation as an aircraft mechanic. After the Navy, he attended Brigham Young University, and graduated from San Jose State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Idaho.

On March 20, 1959, he married Sharon Place in the Salt Lake City Temple. Together, they had four wonderful children; three sons and one daughter. Dale’s greatest joy was to know that his children and grandchildren walked in truth and righteousness. Dale and Sharon were happily married for 62 ½  years. They have lived in Provo, Utah; San Jose, California; Denver, Colorado; and in 1965, they moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where Dale worked at the Idaho National Laboratory. He worked at the site for 30 years, with the last 23 years at Argonne National Laboratory as a Systems Engineer. He was a specialist in hot cell remote handling operations, shielding windows, and remote non-destructive examination of nuclear fuels until taking an early semi-retirement in February 1995. He continued working part-time as an engineering consultant for various companies through the intervening years, until he retired in 2006.

He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as a stake missionary, and in many ward and stake positions, including scoutmaster, bishopric counselor, stake high councilor, and ordinance worker in the Idaho Falls Temple. He loved the gospel and lived his religious beliefs. During the past four years, he diligently did genealogical research for over 8,000 family names that were submitted to the church.

Dale loved fishing, hunting, backpacking, camping, gardening, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. His priorities in life were service to God and Jesus Christ, family, church, and helping other people.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; two sisters; and his son, Scott Tobias.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Tobias of Idaho Falls; son, Steven (Janalee) Tobias of South Jordan, Utah; son, Michael (Melba) Tobias; and daughter, Christine (David) Nelson of Idaho Falls; 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 29, 2021, at the Idaho Falls Templeview Ward building located at 1459 Mountain View Lane, with Bishop Charles Park officiating. The family will visit with friends and family at 10 a.m. for one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Military Honors will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and Idaho Honor Guard.
