WINONA BARNES TELFORD
IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Winona Barnes Telford, one of Idaho
Falls oldest and most respected women, completed her 100 year journey
on earth to join her eternal sweetheart on March 23, 2005. She was our
beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.
The sunshine of the day represented the joy she brought into the hearts
of all those who knew her.
Winona was born March 19, 1905, in Cardston, Alberta,
Canada. She was the second daughter to be born to Edward Charles Barnes
and Laura May Flint Barnes. She attended Jarnigan (later named St. Leon)
School and Idaho Falls High School.
She married her sweetheart, Byron Carlos Telford, April
9, 1922, in Idaho Falls. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan
LDS Temple. They lived on a farm north of Idaho Falls, located on Telford
Road, for many years, before moving to 1198 Canal Avenue in Idaho Falls.
Winona was manager of the ABC Gift Shop in downtown Idaho Falls for 17
years. This was a position that she found great joy in. In her earlier
years she was known for her ability to ride horses, which brought her
happiness. She loved to dance and act in plays, but most of all she loved
her family. She will be remembered as a loving and considerate parent,
grandparent, and neighbor. She was known for her wonderful cooking and
the compassionate service that she rendered to so many.
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, she served well in many positions such as: a member of the North
Idaho Falls Stake Primary Board, the Stake Young Women's Board, as a Counselor
in the Stake Young Women's Presidency, and on the Relief Society Board.
Her husband served many years in the North Idaho Falls Stake Presidency,
consequently, Winona hosted many general authorities in her home. She
was instrumental in obtaining the Darby Campsite which is used for girls
camp for the young women. She served as the Idaho Falls Fourth Ward Compassionate
Service Leader well into her 90's.
She was the oldest living member of the Idaho Falls First
and Idaho Falls Fourth Wards. She had been a member of these wards since
1916. She was a charter member of both of these wards. She was a charter
member of the Bonneville County Senior Citizens. She has been a resident
of Bonneville County since 1911. She was honored as such in 1990.
She was preceded in death by her husband, on March 25,
1974, her parents, two sons, a brother and sister-in-law, two sisters,
two granddaughters, and three great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Afton (L.G.) Ball of
Pocatello; Maxine (the late John W.) Beckstead of Salt Lake City, UT;
