Bill was born January 26, 1930, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, to Edward McIlwain and Thelma Ray McIlwain. He grew up and attended schools in Pennsylvania and graduated from Parker High School. Upon leaving high school, he worked for Pennsylvania Drilling Company, and then Potash Company of America in Carlsbad, and Mine Safety Administration in San Antonio, Texas. He then returned to Carlsbad to work at the Potash Mine where he retired in 1996.
On October 10, 1950, Bill married Martha A. Reeves in Carlsbad, New Mexico. They were blessed with a son, Michael.
He enjoyed woodworking and fishing. He volunteered at the Carlsbad Area Soup Kitchen. He was also a member of the Eddy (#1), Lake Arthur (#35), Artesia (#28), and Felix (#29) Masonic Lodges.
Bill is survived by his son, Michael (Beth) McIlwain of Idaho Falls, ID; brother, Gordon "Bucky" McIlwain; 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha; and a sister.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
The family would like to thank the staff at Lincoln Court Assisted Living and Eastern Idaho Hospice for their help and care. He made many friends there with residents and staff.
