Our beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, Sarah Wanda Whitehead Evans, age 85, of Idaho Falls, passed away May 31, 2011, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.
Wanda was born July 20, 1925, in Lafayette Springs, Mississippi, to Olon Thomas Whitehead and Agatha Mize
Whitehead. She grew up in New Albany, Mississippi, and attended schools there, graduating from Big Black High School in Kilmichael, Mississippi. She continued her schooling at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where she obtained her doctorate in nursing.
On September 30, 1948, she married Eugene Robert Evans in Montgomery, Arkansas. They moved to Idaho Falls in 1963. Wanda was a wonderful homemaker, wife, and mother to their four children, Terry, Janis, Brian, and Robin. She also worked as a Registered Surgical Nurse for LDS Hospital from 1963 to 1970, then completed her career as Nurse Epidemiologist for District Seven Health Department. She was honored by the State of Idaho as one of their Legends of Nursing.
She was a member of the Idaho Falls Church of Christ. Wanda loved her church, her children, her grandchildren, and gardening. Anyone who had the privilege to visit her yard knew she truly had a green thumb.
Wanda is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Gene; two sons, Terry (Cathy) Evans of Cincinnati, OH and Brian Eugene Evans of Idaho Falls, ID; two daughters, Jan (Sid) Brown of Hamer, ID and Robin (Bill) Lindberg of Idaho Falls, ID; a sister, Barbara Ann Hipwell of Anaheim, CA; 6 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and nine
brothers and sisters.
Wanda’s family would like to thank the EIRMC staff and the ICU nurses for all the care they provided and to all Wanda’s friends and neighbors for their love and encouragement.
Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 9, 2011 at the Idaho Falls Church of Christ, 2650 Plommon, with Minister Lyle Newell officiating. The family will visit with friends for one hour prior to services and will meet after services for a luncheon at the church.
