Walter William Day, 80, of Idaho Falls, passed away May 7, 2018, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. Walt was born March 24, 1938, in Brush, Colorado, to Clifford Barton Day and Dorthy Toots Christensen Day. He grew up and attended schools in Rigby, Idaho. He was a member of the Army National Guard for seven years. One of his first cars was a Plymouth convertible that he loved to run around town in with his school buddies and his sidekick, a dog named Kap. On September 14, 1962, he married Maureen Kay McKenna in Rexburg, Idaho. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on June 27, 1992. To this union were born four children, Brian, Annette, Brenda and Julie. Walt and Maureen made their home in the Menan area where Walt worked for different farmers around the area moving pipe and farming. In 1969, they moved to Riverton, Wyoming, where they lived for the next 46 years. Walt worked as a heavy equipment operator for Pathfinder Mines. He could operate most of the heavy equipment at the open pit uranium mine. His favorites were the big dozers. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in various capacities in the church, including as a counselor in a Bishopric, High Priest Group Leader, Cub Scout Leader and Den Leader. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. He enjoyed sports and was an umpire for his son’s baseball games. He supported his children in all of their activities, especially their 4H and FFA projects. Walt is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Maureen Day of Idaho Falls, ID; son, Brian (Sonya) Day of Glendive, MT; daughter, Annette (Casey) Backus of Ammon, ID; daughter, Brenda (Galen) Porter of Rock Springs, WY; daughter, Julie Ann (Thomas) Hill of Greensboro, NC; brother, Alvie (Patty) Day of Roberts, ID; sister, Gladys Gneiting of Roberts, ID; brother, Charles (Betty) Day of Menan, ID; sister, Carol (Ron) Walls of Salt Lake City, UT; brother, Bobby Day of UT; 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Dorthy Day; brother, Clifford Day; and grandson, Martin Poter. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018, at the Iona LDS Building, 5169 East Denning, with Bishop Tom Kinghorn of the Red Rock Ward officiating. The family will visit with friends Friday from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road, and Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Annis-Little Butte Cemetery where Military Rites will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and Idaho Honor Guard.
