Longtime Blackfoot resident, Von E. Thurman, 84, passed away peacefully at the Idaho Falls Regional Medical Center on January 11, 2014, due to natural causes.
Von was born on September 29, 1929, at Thomas, Idaho to Elmer and Elva Thurman. Von attended school in Afton, Wyoming where he lived with his grandfather. He later attended Blackfoot High School where he lettered in track and boxing and graduated in 1947. He also attended Barber College in Boise, Idaho. In 1947, he met the love of his life, Alice Pearson, and they were married on January 27, 1948. Von and Alice enjoyed spending time together with family and friends playing games and eating dinners together. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he also enjoyed woodworking, and loved to travel when he could.
Von worked with his grandfather in Afton, Wyoming, and for Lambert Produce, for the railroad, the lumberyard, and the Blackfoot school district where he retired in 1997 as a custodian. Von was a second generation barber where he worked side by side with his father in the family business located in Blackfoot until his health deteriorated.
Von was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Edward Thurman; his mother, Elva Leora Thurman; his sister, Shirley Woodland, as well as his loving wife, Alice Thurman.
He is survived by his three daughters: Chris (Blaine) Burkman of Blackfoot, ID; Linda (Brent) Inskeep of Blackfoot, ID; and Shawna (David) McNeil of Anchorage, AK; his son, Dennis (Donna) Thurman of Idaho Falls, ID; his sisters, Karen Badten of Chubbuck; ID and Georgia Argyle of Albuquerque; NM; and his brother, Ronald Thurman, of Bullhead City, AZ; as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at the Blackfoot LDS 11th Ward (520 N. Shilling, Blackfoot, Idaho 83221). The family will visit with friends on Wednesday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church. Burial will follow at the Shelley Hillcrest Cemetery.
