VERNON HERBST Click here to view video of Vernon's Life IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Vernon Roscoe Herbst, 86, of Idaho Falls, died February 18, 2008, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. He was born on May 29, 1921, at Blackfoot to John William Herbst and Mabel Stevenson Herbst. He grew up and attended schools in the area, graduating from Blackfoot High School. Following high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and lived for a short time in California. He served as a Seaman Second Class during World War II. On December 21, 1943, he married Alice Chaffin in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She preceded him in death. On September 9, 1986, he married Lois Nora Winther in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. He was a farmer and also served on the school board. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in numerous callings including Bishop of the Rose Ward for 13 years. He enjoyed sports, riding horses, raising cattle, and being outdoors. Vernon especially loved his family and being with them. Survivors are: Wife: Lois Herbst, Idaho Falls, ID Son: Ladd (Marilyn) Herbst, Rexburg, ID Son: Terry Wade (Carol) Herbst, Firth, ID Daughter: DeAnn (Bo) Karratti, Pleasant Grove, UT Daughter: Janet Cherry, Blackfoot, ID Stepdaughter: Arlene (Roger) Wright, Idaho Falls, ID Stepdaughter: Perlene (Doug) Walters, Idaho Falls, ID Brother: Dale (Carma) Herbst, Rigby, ID Brother: Leland (Ortis) Herbst, Blackfoot, ID Sister: Rowena (Forrest) Erickson, Michigan 23 Grandchildren and 21 Great Grandchildren He was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Jalene Gough; a grandchild; four brothers, Ronald, Delmar, Farrell, and Randall; and one sister, Elaine Johnson. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 22, 2008, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and for one hour prior to the services Friday, both at Wood East Side.
