Vernon Hyrum Byington, 94, of Idaho Falls, passed away February 4, 2016, at Idaho State Veterans Home in Pocatello, Idaho.
Vern was born November 10, 1921, in Preston, Idaho, to Royal Elliot Byington and Ethel Lovisa Christensen Byington. He graduated from Downey High School.
On June 6, 1949, he married Darlene Hart Byington in the Logan, Utah, LDS Temple. They lived briefly in Thatcher and Woodville, Idaho, then in Idaho Falls for 26 years and Logan, Utah, for 27 years before returning to Idaho Falls 13 years ago. Vernon worked as a carpet layer for Ahlstrom’s Furniture and Cache Country Carpets.
Vern was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints and served in various capacities. He enjoyed hiking, camping, fishing, gardening , snowmobiling and BINGO while at the Pocatello Veteran’s Home.
Vern was a US Army veteran and a German POW during WWII.
Vern is survived by daughter, Sydnee Cherry of Idaho Falls, ID;
son, Greg (Sharon) Byington of Sierra Vista, AZ;
daughter, Barbara (Kevin) Case of Shelley, ID
sister, Lila Coburn of Brigham City, UT;
8 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Royal Elliot Byington; mother, Ethel Lovisa Christensen; wife, Darlene Hart Byington; five sisters, Ruby, Laurna, Delda, Ruth and Nona; three brothers, Dwain, Donald and Melvin; and a son-in-law, Nolan Cherry.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 12, 2016, at the Idaho Falls LDS Stake Center, 1155 First Street, with Bishop Robert Pettit of the Idaho Falls LDS 21st Ward officiating. The family will visit with friends Friday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior. Burial will be in the Preston City Cemetery. Veteran’s Rites will be provided by the Idaho Honor Guard.
