VERLA SORENSON
IONA, ID -- Verla Willmore Sorenson, 83, of Iona, passed away at her home February 9, 2007, surrounded by her family. She was under the care of Aspen Home Health & Hospice.
Verla was born August 27, 1923, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Ephraim Willmore and Viola Rigby Willmore. She was the third of ten children. She grew up and attended schools in Hibbard, Idaho. She was always very close to her six sisters and three brothers, and enjoyed being with them throughout her life.
Verla married J. Ford Sorenson March 19, 1940, in the Logan, Utah, LDS Temple. They made their early home in Hibbard before moving to Iona, where they raised their six children for the following twenty-five years. They were later divorced.
Verla’s greatest joy was caring for her family. Their home was a gathering place for many friends and relatives, never needing an invitation, or special occasion. She derived much satisfaction from the wonderful meals she was always so happy and willing to prepare. Verla was a wonderful cook. She loved watching her sons and grandchildren play basketball, and enjoyed many of their games.
She enjoyed dancing, pinochle parties, and bowling. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held various callings over the years. She worked at JJ Newberry, Denning’s Grocery, and The Mart. She was very active and a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, serving as President. Verla’s life was forever changed after the death of her youngest son, Michael, in 1965, from an accident at two and a half years old, and again in 1974, with the death of her oldest son, Leanord.
She married Andrew Polson and they lived in Idaho Falls, spending winters in Arizona. They later divorced. She returned to Iona in 1998 to be near to her family, building a home next to her daughter. It brought her great joy to witness her grandchildren graduate from high school and share that day with them. All those who met her commented on her beauty, both inside and out.
Survivors include her daughter, JoAnn (Jerry) Hansen of Iona, son, Delbert (Kathy) Sorenson of Iona, son, Marvin Sorenson of Idaho Falls, daughter, Jeanie (Randy) Muir of Idaho Falls, brother, Harlo Willmore of Boise, sister, Betty (Percy) Vickery of Cedar City, UT, triplet sisters, Mary Koeper and Martha (Danny) Goodman of Post Falls, ID; 16 Grandchildren, 39 Great grandchildren, and 7 Great Great grandchildren . She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Leanord Ford Sorenson and Michael J. Sorenson; sisters, Helen Blackburn, Letha Bateman; a triplet sister, Marva Winterbottom; and two brothers, Rigby Willmore and George Willmore.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at Wood East Side Chapel, 963 S. Ammon Road, Idaho Falls, with Rick Denning of the Iona 2nd Ward Bishopric officiating. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. both at Wood East Side.
Burial will be in the Iona Cemetery under the direction of Wood Funeral Home.
