Veda Rebecca Lucas Woffinden died on September 9, 2014 at age 100, of causes incident to age. She was born on December 2, 1913 a three-and-a-half pound premature twin. She and her twin were born in pioneer conditions in remote Grouse Creek, Utah. Her parents were Orilla Amy Jorgensen Lucas and Charles Edward Lucas. Her mother ran a country store and her father ranched. Her siblings included a half sister and brother, Elva Porter and Bertrum Lucas, as well as Edward Cleon Lucas (deceased at 3), Vida Forsgren (twin), Glenna Crookston, and Della Mae Miller. Coie O'Malley (Veda's niece) was also raised in their home.
Veda's family lived in Grouse Creek until 1922. Her experiences included playing and sledding in the hills; a one-room schoolhouse; transportation by horse, wagon, or sleigh; community family dances; and Saturday night baths in the old tin tub. The remainder of her youth was spent in Logan, Utah. Here she attended Utah State Agriculture College where she obtained a three-year normal degree, and then later attended Brigham Young University for her Bachelor of Science degree.
While in Logan, she met and married William Goates Woffinden. They were married in the Logan Temple. They lived in Ogden, Utah; Garland, Utah; Belle Fourche, South Dakota; Midvale, Utah; and Idaho Falls, Idaho.
She loved to dance. She won dance contests. She was talented with crafts. She enjoyed needlework, painting ceramics, crocheting, and writing rhymes for special events. She enjoyed people, socializing, and gatherings. She remembered names, dates, and events well, until her later years.
She loved children. She was gifted and spent many years as a teacher. During the late thirties, school policies provided that teaching jobs were only available for heads of households and the unmarried. During this time she substitute taught. Later, she taught elementary school in several Utah schools in Box Elder and Jordan School Districts. She also taught in Idaho Falls at Dora Erickson Elementary. She taught twenty-four years. She was trained in new reading methods and taught those to other teachers. She was a member of the Association for Childhood Education, and served as vice president and president. After teaching she retired and traveled, spending winters in Mesa, Arizona.
Talking about classroom teaching, being around small children, and participating in social settings genuinely boosted her spirits.
Veda was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She found peace in the gospel. She was a woman of faith. She worked in MIA and also served as a president. She served as a teacher and a counselor in Primary. She served in Relief Society. She served as a teacher and teacher trainer in Sunday School.
She was a good mother. She taught character building values. She lived them. She looked out for, sacrificed, and loved her children. She was their biggest cheerleader.
Her devoted husband, William Goates Woffinden (Bill), her son, William Lucas Woffinden (Bill Jr.), her infant, Jeanne Woffinden, and grandsons, Gregg K. Stepan, Matt Damon Woffinden, and Cameron Wade Davis preceded Veda in death.
Veda and Bill raised with four children: William Lucas (Thelma) Woffinden, Sharol Bangerter, Susan (Don) Stepan, and Marion (Bart) Davis. Veda had fifteen grandchildren and thirty-four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the Idaho Falls Woodruff LDS 2nd Ward (1660 12th Street). The family will visit with friends on Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home (273 North Ridge Avenue) and on Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Logan Cemetery at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2014.
