IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Vaun Marvin Kirby, 76, of Idaho Falls, died December 31, 2007, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center of cancer.
He was born March 3, 1931, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was the only child of Marvin and Lois Lloyd Kirby. He attended schools in Idaho Falls. After high school, he worked for the Hubbard Brothers Farms in Dillon, Montana.
In the fall of 1950, he began working as a surgical orderly at LDS Hospital in Idaho Falls. One day, he went to Dr. Crabtree to have a tooth pulled and met Joy Lee Lemons. He was smitten and they were married six weeks later on July 19, 1951. One month after their marriage, he was called to serve our country in the Korean War. He served most of his tour of duty as an Army medic at Camp Drake in Tokyo, Japan.
After returning from the war, he worked for several years in the lab at Challenge Creamery. In 1958, he went to work for the Idaho Falls Police Department. After 26 years, he retired from the Department as a Sergeant in 1984. Never one to sit idle, he soon went to work for Westinghouse at the INL site. He then returned to law enforcement and worked as a court bailiff for Bonneville
County for the next 12 years.
He and his wife also repaired sewing machines from their home for more than 40 years. Vaun loved camping and fishing with his family. He served in many callings as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He filled two family history missions with his wife, Joy Lee, at the Family History Center in Salt Lake City and in Idaho Falls. He was a kind and loving husband. He and his wife’s devotion to one another after 56 years of marriage has been an awesome example to their family. He was a dedicated and caring father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Joy Lee, and their three children: Linden (Michelle) Kirby; David “Tiny” Kirby, all of Idaho Falls, and Debra Kirby, of Bountiful, Utah. He is also survived by his three wonderful grandchildren: Russell, Heather and Justin Kirby of Idaho Falls.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2008, at the Idaho Falls LDS South Stake Center, 2051 S. Emerson, with Bishop Steve Parry of the 15th Ward officiating. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge, and Thursday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Taylor Cemetery.
