Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Val Ray Roberts, 75, of Chesterfield, Idaho, passed away December 15, 2011, at his home, of cancer. He was under the care of his loving family.
Val was born September 28, 1936, in Wilford, Idaho, to Kenneth Roberts and Athalia Spillman Roberts. He spent his earliest years in St. Anthony, then grew up and attended schools in Sugar City, where he graduated from Sugar-Salem High School. He also attended Ricks College and Idaho State University, where he completed his radio and television electronics training. He proudly served his country as a Sergeant First Class in the Idaho National Guard.
On April 2, 1958, he married Rosalie Yost in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They made their home in the Portland, Oregon area, where they lived for 42 years. Val started working as an electrical engineer for KPTV Channel 12 in 1960, where he began his long television broadcasting career. He was eventually promoted to the position of Chief Engineer and held that position until his retirement in 2002. Following retirement Val and Rosalie moved to Chesterfield, Idaho, where he served as President and on the board of the Chesterfield Foundation. They moved to Ammon six months ago.
Val was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as the Ward Clerk for the Chesterfield Ward for the past seven years. In his youth he earned his Eagle Scout through the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed airplanes, western movies, computer work, fishing, duck hunting, and overseeing multiple construction projects, including a new television station, his retirement home, and a beloved windmill.
Val is survived by his wife of over 53 years, Rosalie, two sons, Rodney K. (Susan) Roberts of Ammon, ID, and Christian H. (Barbara) Roberts of Pocatello, ID; a daughter, Trena L. (Kim) Haws of Houston, TX; his mother, Athalia Roberts of Aberdeen, ID; three brothers, Don (Nola) Roberts and Dennis(Jan) Roberts, both of Draper, UT, and Larry ( Jane) Roberts of Idaho Falls, ID; a sister, Reneé (Marvin)Schritter of American Falls, ID; 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Roberts, and his father and mother-in-law, Glenn and Frances Yost.
The family will visit with friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2011, at the Bancroft LDS Church, 311 South Main Street. Funeral Services will be held at 12 Noon Monday, December 19, 2011, at the Chesterfield LDS Church, 1001 East Stalker Road, with Bishop Grant Simons officiating. The family will visit with friends Monday from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. at the Chesterfield LDS Church. Burial will be in the Bancroft Cemetery.
