Tyrone “Ty” Kingi TeNgaio, 73, of Idaho Falls, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2015 from natural causes.
Tyrone was born March 5, 1942 in Wairoa, New Zealand. He attended Maeroa Intermediate School, then Hamilton Technical College and the Church College of New Zealand.
While in school, Ty was very active in sports such as track, tennis, rugby and fast pitch softball. He was an avid racquetball player throughout his 30’s and 40’s. He was also an avid bookworm who loved reading.
In August of 1959 Ty left New Zealand to attend the Church College of Hawaii (now BYU-Hawaii] where he met the love of his life, Mary Jeanne Whittington, who was also attending CCH. They wed on June 21, 1962 in Hawaii and had five children in the following years.
Tyrone graduated from CCH in 1965 with a Bachelors degree in Education/Business Management & Marketing. Then he spent a year in graduate studies at the University of Hawaii.
While living in Hawaii, Ty was mainly involved in the pharmaceutical and medical supplies field, which he was quite successful in. At the same time he successfully managed an international entertainer, John Rowles, for over 4 years. The two became lifelong friends.
Upon moving to Idaho Falls in 1989, he joined the Smith Chevrolet Co. in Sales and then in Finance. He enjoyed and continued working in the car industry for several years.
Tyrone was an active and devote member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held many callings during his time. Among them, his favorite was teaching Sunday school. He loved to spread the gospel and engage young minds.
Later in his “retired” life, Ty took up substitute teaching within District 91. Once again it was his chance to engage young minds and he loved it. He was also involved with past-Mayor Jared Furhiman’s Race Relations for several years.
Tyrone is survived by his sister, Elaine (Richard) Marsh of Dannevirke, New Zealand; daughter, Tanya TeNgaio; sons Matt (Brittany) and Jake TeNgaio; grandchildren, Austin TeNgaio, Autumn Clifford, Kai and Kenzi TeNgaio, and Ethan and Madeline TeNgaio; great-grandchild, Aryo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mille TeNgaio; wife, Mary TeNgaio; son, Kenneth TeNgaio; daughter Laura TeNgaio.
The family would like to thank the staff at Teton Acute Care and Rehab and Dr. Rahim and his staff at the Idaho Kidney Institute for their kindness and care of our father.
