Troy Jack Johnston

Troy Jack Johnston, 66, of Idaho Falls, passed away May 12, 2025, at his home after a long, but valiant battle with health issues.

Troy was born June 3, 1958, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Jack Hutchens Grover and Alyce Fay Woolf Sommerville. Troy traveled in his youth with the family and lived and attended schools in Boston, Pittsburgh, and San Diego, settling in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and attending Bonneville High School, Class of 1977. He served in the United States Army from 1977-1984.

Troy was blessed with four daughters, Penny, Jana Kay, Rexanna, and Summer. Troy loved his girls, teaching them what he loved most, how to hunt, fish, and camp. Troy made his home in Idaho Falls where he worked in construction. Troy was a simple man and lived a simple life.

Troy was raised in Iona on his grandparents farm where he worked alongside his grandpa learning how to tend the farm. Troy was an avid outdoorsman and loved being outdoors doing what he loved most, hunting, fishing, and camping. Troy loved his grandkids and loved teaching them to fish, and attending all their functions. The grandkids brought Troy immense joy and he has missed them as he fought his health battles.

Troy is survived by his daughters, Penny of Montana; Jana Kay Smith of LaGrange, Georgia; Rexanna Marie Johnston of Nevada; and Summer Hope Johnston of Idaho Falls; his father, Jack (Roberta) Grover; sister, A. Kim Johnston of Idaho Falls; and six grandchildren. Troy also leaves behind his faithful companion, his pup, Lady; and a loving extended family of brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Troy is preceded in death by his mother, Alyce (Richard) Sommerville; his sister, Gayla Johnston Davis; his grandparents, Rex and Berniece Woolf; and his aunt and uncle, Vet and Patricia Woolf.

A celebration of Troy's life will be held in July. If you would like more information you can reach out to Troy's sister at k.johnston.ida@gmail.com .
