Trent Tate Packer, 72, of Rigby, passed away July 2, 2016, at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Trent was born August 5, 1943, in Preston, Idaho, to Rex Smith Packer and Susan Tate Packer. He grew up and attended schools in Riverdale and graduated from Preston High School. He lived in Idaho Falls while attending Ricks College. He also served in the Idaho National Guard.
On September 23, 1965, he married Betty Hanson in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. They were later divorced. Trent married Sheryl Deneise Gardner Summers in the Idaho Falls, Idaho, LDS Temple on October 22, 1994. Their combined families included nine children, Brian, Suzanne, Andrea, Steve, Sharianne, Clinton, Jenifer, Bryce, and Heather. Trent and Sheryl made their home in Rigby, Idaho. He worked as a salesman for Deckers in Idaho Falls for 20 years. In 1985 he began working at the INL. He especially enjoyed working on the M1 A1 Tank Program. He retired in 2006. Following retirement, he worked for the Rollin’ Shuttle and Apple Athletic Club.
Trent was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a full-time LDS mission to New Zealand. He served in numerous positions including High Priest leadership, Scout Master, member of the High Council, and most recently as clerk at BYU-Idaho. He was extremely active in the scouting program. He was awarded the Hall of Fame, the Silver Beaver, as well as countless other awards. He played softball for Ricks College, coached and umpired softball, refereed church basketball, and played Santa Claus for years. He enjoyed leather working, golfing, and gardening. He mostly enjoyed being with his family.
Trent is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Sheryl Packer of Rigby, ID; son, Brian Packer of Iona, ID; daughter, Suzanne (Steve) Mickelsen of Middleton, ID; daughter, Andrea (Derrick) Ammon of Iona, ID; son, Steve (Tammy) Summers of Austin, TX; daughter, Sharianne Lane of Rigby, ID; son, Clinton (Meadow) Summers of Missoula, MT; daughter, Jenifer (Nolan) Bybee of Rexburg, ID; son, Bryce Summers of Rigby, ID; daughter, Heather (Barry) Jenks of Pocatello, ID; sister, Judy Edgar of Riverdale, ID; sister, SueLyn Murdock of Boise, ID; sister, Brenda (Dwight) Rawlings of Montrose, CO; 19 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents and brother, Ronnie Packer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2016, at Rigby LDS East Stake Center, 4021 East 300 North, with Bishop Brent Kunz of the Rigby 2nd Ward officiating. The family will visit with friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road and Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Riverdale Cemetery.
