George Thomas Nick, 66, was killed in a horse accident while herding sheep in the Medicine Lodge area last Monday, August 22, 2011. His body was recovered by the Clark County Sheriff’s Department Saturday afternoon, August 27, 2011, after an extensive search effort by Idaho and Montana Search and Rescue, local cowboys, and many friends and neighbors. Tom was born in Rigby, Idaho, on September 9, 1944, to George and Thelma Nick, and grew up on the family farm in Monteview, Idaho. Quitting school early, Tom joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam where he was severely wounded. After being honorably discharged, Tom returned to Idaho and married a neighbor girl, Kathrine A. Wadsworth. Two sons were born to the marriage which ended in divorce after seven years. Tom worked at numerous jobs in many places until he retired and settled in Salmon. Tom loved the mountains and was most widely known as a sheepherder. He loved hunting, fishing, playing guitar, dancing, pack trips and camping. Tom was quite a character, and has provided people with many smiles and laughs and many unique and precious memories. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother, Ray (Gloria) Nick of Rigby; sons, Bill Nick of Fairbanks, Alaska and Dave (Jessica) Nick of Dillon, Montana; grandchildren, Rosy and Royce; and many people chuckling and shaking their heads.
