Thomas H. Stickley, 92, of Idaho Falls passed away August 15, 2014 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. He was under the care of Encompass Hospice.
Thomas was born in Rensselaer, New York, on August 22, 1921, to Thomas Edwin Stickley and Henrietta May Fowler Stickley. He attended high school in Rensselaer and college at Rensselaer Polytecnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. He then went to work for General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York, ultimately being classified as an instrument maker.
During World War II, he enrolled in the Navy V-5 program and graduated as a Navel Aviator. He served as a carrier pilot in the South Pacific until an honorable discharge in 1945. He qualified for a commercial pilot’s license.
On July 7, 1946, Tom married Vera Robison in Rensselaer, New York. They were the parents of four children, Daniel, Sharon, John, and Tim. Vera passed away March, 21, 2014.
Upon graduation from RPI in September 1948 with a Masters of Chemical Engineering, he was employed by the Atomic Energy Commission in Schenectady, New York. He began work in Idaho Falls in October, 1949. In 1953, he was transferred to AEC Safety. He became Safety Supervisor in 1959 and joined the American Society of Safety Engineers. In 1970, he qualified as a Certified Safety Professional. In 1974, he was accepted as a member of the National Society for General Proficiency in Industrial Safety from the University of Idaho. Also in 1974, he became a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Committee on cranes for nuclear facilities, and was chairman from 1978 through July, 1986. He wrote the “DOE Hoisting & Rigging Manual” and the “DOE Drilling Safety Manual.” He was listed in “Who’s Who in the West” in 1984 and 1985.
During his years in Idaho Falls, Tom was a member of the Board of Directors of the YMCA; a member of the Official Board and chairman of the Trustees of Trinity United Methodist Church; a member of the Board of Directors of the Idaho Falls Senior Citizen’s Community Center; and a member of the Supervisory Committee of Westmark Federal Credit Union.
He participated in a fire safety inspection of the schools in District #91, and was part of the sub-committee that reported on the ambulance service in Idaho Falls.
He enjoyed outings with his family. While Vera and Sharon went painting, the boys went fishing, hunting, and doing water sports. He was fond of outdoor adventures and traveling the United States and abroad with his wife.

sister, Mary Jane Lanier of Anderson, SC.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 North Ridge Avenue. The family will meet with friends from 1-1:45 p.m. prior to the services. Burial will be in the Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery.
