Thaylon Hobbs

Our dad, Thaylon Rolla Hobbs, age 93, was born February 17, 1925 at his family home in Franklin, Idaho, to Rolla Parkinson and Ruby Petterborg Hobbs and left this life to be with his favorite girlfriend Sunday, June 17, 2018 at his home in Idaho Falls. He was surrounded by his family. He enjoyed an adventurous childhood and attended school in Franklin and worked in the sugar beet fields and pea factory in Franklin. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943 to 1946. After returning home, he met and married Mary Lu Smith of Preston, in Logan, Utah on October 9, 1947. They moved to Idaho Falls in 1952. Dad worked nights as a security guard with the AEC and days for Rhinehart Concrete. He understood work. In 1954, he began driving bus at the Site for Lost River Transportation, a job he thoroughly enjoyed that allowed him to meet and visit with people every day. Over the next 35 years he recorded nearly two million accident free miles working as many scheduled and extra shifts as possible. He enjoyed driving and in retirement logged many miles shuttling rental cars, pulling his 5th wheel, and visiting family and friends. Dad and Mom loved their family, raising 7 children: Craig (Sallie), Bruce (Julia), Brett (Carma), Sandra (Todd) Manwaring, Michelle Crawford, Angela (Dennis) Hummer, and Joni (Alan) Anderson. They are Grandparents to 30 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren and still growing. Dad demonstrated the importance of getting and keeping a job, being thrifty, paying what you owe, saving what you could, being dependable and serving others. He tried to teach us timeliness; but, he was working against Mom's Smith family heritage. His father, Rolla died of Scarlet Fever when he was 10 years old. He cared for his mother the remainder of her life. There was never a drive through Pocatello that he didn't stop to take her along or check on her welfare. He was a great example of what it took to journey through this life. He had a keen wit and a loving sense of humor. His daily example blesses our families' lives. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was always active in his family's life and became more active in the Church later in his life. On July 11, 1998, we were sealed as a family in the Idaho Falls Temple. His advice was steady, sound and loving. His life was his sermon and his prayer's were sincere and genuine. He was a good man. Dad was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 68 years, Mary Lu; a younger brother, Frayne; and his baby sister, Sharatelle. He is survived by his 7 children, their spouses and all his grandkids and great grandbabies.
