He was born in Ogden, Utah, July 8, 1917, to Edmund Eugene Carr and Rachel Wright Carr. His grandparents were pioneering Ogden merchants, Thomas H. Carr, Emma Augusta Ohlson, Angus T. Wright, and Martha Jane Middleton. He was a Boy Scout, good student and worked hard at part-time jobs such as his early morning paper route, accompanied by his beloved dog "Rip." After graduation from Ogden High School, Depression Era challenges delayed his entrance to college. In 1938 he matriculated at the University of Idaho, Southern Branch, in Pocatello, Idaho, in the College of Pharmacy. While there he was active in extracurricular endeavors and served as freshman class president, editor of the college newspaper and student body president. Betty Olsen, from Kimberly, Idaho, worked as a reporter at the paper. They fell in love and married in September of 1941. He graduated with a degree in pharmacy in 1942. A pharmaceutical company employed him until December of 1942, when he accepted a commission in the U.S. Navy. He served as the gunnery officer in charge of the Navy gun crews placed on merchant marine ships. His first assignment was on board the new Liberty ship, S.S. Joseph Smith. Following discharge from the Navy in December 1945, he returned to college, entering medical school at the University of Utah. After medical school, he completed a surgical residency (also at the U. of U.). He and Betty selected Idaho Falls as their home in 1954 where they raised their seven children. His patients knew him as caring and wise, even after retirement. During his practice he served a term as president of the county medical society, president of staff at the Sacred Heart Hospital, and director of the Idaho Cancer Society. He served a term on the Board of Directors of the ISU Alumni Association. Dad greatly enjoyed the Idaho outdoors. He was an avid fisherman, skier and golfer. He loved to read and learn and he pursued new subjects year after year even until his latest years. Most of all he loved Mom – his college sweetheart and bride of 67 years – and all his family. No one was more enthusiastic and sentimental than he at Christmastime and other family holidays. Preceding him in death are: his parents, a baby brother, a son, Taylor D. Carr, and a granddaughter, Deidra Ann Walker. Surviving him are his wife, Betty (Olsen) Carr; children: Katherine Carr, Idaho Falls; Phillip (Cherie) Carr, Idaho Falls; Jan (Mike) Sousa, Missoula, Montana; Kenneth W. Carr, Logan, Utah; Steven (Cindy) Carr, Idaho Falls; Gregory Carr, Ketchum, Idaho; sixteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, a brother, Eugene Edmund (Katherine) Carr, Salt Lake City, Utah; and a sister, Florence W. (Fritz) Monson, Ogden, Utah; and nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the compassion and care he received at Life Care Center and Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge, Idaho Falls. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Thursday from 1 to 1:45 p.m., both at Wood Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery under the direction of Wood Funeral Home. ---------------------------------------------------- Condolences received online: Barbara Maskarinec Barbara.Maskarinec@gmail.com Pease accept my sincere condolences on the death of Dr. Carr. Judy Madsen Swaner judy.mecham@wellsfargo.com I was saddened to see the obituary in the Ogden paper--my parents were Ed and Virginia Madsen, and as a child, I remember hearing so many stories about him.
