Sophrona Petersen Hanson, 99, of Idaho Falls, passed away August 23, 2021, at Lincoln Court Retirement Community. She was under the care of her loving family and Hands of Hope Hospice. Grandma finally stopped being stubborn. Sophrona was born June 28, 1922, in St. Anthony, Idaho, to Lars Jacob Petersen and Mildred Johanna Nyborg Petersen. She grew up in Twin Groves and attended 1st-8th grades in a two-room schoolhouse in Twin Groves. She graduated in 1940 from St. Anthony High School where she served as the Sophomore, Junior and Senior Class Secretary, Queen of her Junior Class, and Treasurer during her Senior year. She lettered in band where she played the clarinet. On November 18, 1944, she married Clifford LeGrand Hanson in Lima, Montana, by a blind Justice of the Peace. Cliff and Sophrona honeymooned on the Army in Santa Barbara at the Biltmore Hotel. They were blessed with four children, Edward, Linda, Kevin, and Lyle. They made their home in St. Anthony, Blackfoot, many towns in Utah and Nevada, and landed in Ammon in 1964 where she resided until 2019 when she moved to Lincoln Court. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Eagles, and DUP. Bowling, playing Pinochle and playing card games with family members were pastimes she enjoyed. She enjoyed restoring furniture, crafts of all kinds, crocheting, embroidering, quilting, and sewing. She could sew anything and did sew everything. She pieced and hand quilted wedding quilts for every child and grandchild, and all of the great grandchildren received baby quilts. She loved gardening and her flower beds were beautiful. Sophrona is survived by her children, Edward (Donna) Hanson of Idaho Falls; Linda Fitzpatrick of Idaho Falls; Kevin (Joan) Hanson of Sun City, AZ; and Lyle (Sheree) Hanson of Idaho Falls; nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford Hanson; brothers, Chester, Verl, and Royal Cleon Petersen; and a grandson, Jerry Hanson. The family will visit with friends from 1-2:15 p.m. Saturday, August 28, 2021, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road. Burial will be in the Wilford Cemetery at 3 p.m.
