Shirley Evva (Derricott) West

Shirley West, 80, passed away on September 28, 2024, at Syringa Chalet Nursing Home. The last 15 years of life, her mind had to have little pauses. She lived at State Hospital, Syringa Chalet, to get the quality help she needed. The staff there were made in Heaven for her, we thank them for the special care they took with her.

She was born in Montpelier, Idaho, to Wayne Smith Derricott and Grace Leon Hayes Derricott. Her siblings are Delmar S. Derricott, Wayne Vance Derricott, and Carol Renae Derricott Hatch. She graduated from Sugar-Salem High in 1962, then went onto Ricks College to earn a Business Certificate the following year.

She met and married Charles Weeks, together they had a son, Kevin, and later divorced. Shirley went on to meet Eddie West on a blind date. They were married in a double wedding on November 29, 1969. On July 7, 1978 they were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple. Eddie adopted Kevin as his own and soon after Dusty, their daughter, completed their family.

She enjoyed making and doing crafts, playing the piano, scrap booking, needle point, loved reading, and playing cards and games (especially Pinochle)! Shirley liked to collect miniatures and made them into momentos.

Shirley was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved to serve others, volunteering in the community and in her family. Always helping others before herself. She and Eddie were seen daily down by the river on their scooters waving to everyone.

Shirley worked with EICAP, the Gleaners program which started her new bond with friends who became family. She loved to garden and could bring plant life back with her green thumb. When Dusty married and moved away, these folks adopted ‘Nana and Caw Paw’ to make sure they were never alone!

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Dusty Kulavic; son, Kevin West; grandsons, Derec Kulavic, Jae (Savannah) Kulavic, Deven Kulavic, and Mark Kulavic; great granddaughters, Paisley and Scarlette Kulavic; sister, Carol (Duane) Hatch; sister-in-law, Sharon Thompson; and many, many, many family members!!

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie West; her parents; brother and sister in law, Delmar and Sharon Derricott;  great grandson, Lincoln Jae Kulavic; brother, Vance Derricott and his wife, Marie Derricott; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.

A celebration of life will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 2, 2024, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4375 East Sunnyside Road, Idaho Falls, Idaho. Please come dressed casually to say good-bye to Nana/Shirley and bring memories to share.

Like she would say in her videos she made for Facebook, “ I love and miss you all.”
