Shirley Ann (Byrd) Bird

Our sweet precious mother, Shirley Ann Byrd Bird, 94, passed away at the end of a remarkable day, surrounded by her loving family on Friday, July 25, 2025.

She was born on July 4, 1931, in Lovell, Wyoming, to George Alexander Byrd and Elda Asay. Shirley was the second child of eleven children.

She grew up in Lovell, Wyoming, until she was 9 years old, then her family moved to Billings, Montana, where she attended school.

Shirley met Alvin W. Bird in 1948, and they were married on January 19, 1949. She married Alvin in the Idaho Falls Temple. They raised their family in Monteview, Idaho, until 1969, when they moved to Milo, Idaho, where they bought the Warren and Rozella Bird family farm, and finished raising their younger children.

Shirley was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served faithfully in many callings.

Shirley was an excellent gardener and a great cook. Her potato salad was the best anyone ever made. Homemade bread was always available. She also taught many family members how to make homemade bread—“Best in the world.”

Alvin and Shirley are the parents of eight children, Brent (Kathy), Betty (Darwin) McKay, Jere (Neil) Harris, Kim (Carla), Layne (Brenda), Ron (Denise), Jana (Sean) Tarbet, and Alan (Jodi).

In 1994, Alvin and Shirley served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Birmingham, England. This was an experience they both cherished. They loved missionary work and made lifelong friends.

Shirley is survived by her eight children and her sister, Sandra (Noel) Newberg; her 50 grandchildren, 89 great grandchildren, and 34 great-great grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Bird; parents, George and Elda Byrd; and her nine siblings.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the Milo Ward Chapel,12127 N. 75th E. in Milo. A visitation for family and friends will be held Friday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road, and Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Milo Cemetery.
