SHIRLEY BARLOW
AMMON, ID -- Shirley Marie Barlow, 79, of Idaho Falls passed
away suddenly on Tuesday, March 29, 2005, of heart failure. Our beloved Shirley
- wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother - was taken too soon from
a large family that loved and appreciated her.
She was born April 19, 1925, in Ogden, Utah, to Herbert L.
And Angie Marie Lowther Fronk in the home of her grandparents. She never was
quite certain which grandparents' home, because they lived next door to one
another. Shirley was joined by a sister, Joy, and nearly 20 years later, by
a brother, Garth. Her childhood days were spent surrounded by love, family
and music.
Shirley had fond memories of pep club, art guild, social
clubs, dances and sorority functions while attending Ogden High School where
she graduated in 1943. She attended Weber State college. Shirley also worked
as a requisitions clerk for the 2nd Street Army Adjutant Depot in Ogden, teaching
Italian prisoners of war to speak the English language.
At the height of World War II, she moved to California where
a girlfriend introduced her to Phillip Harold Barlow, a handsome Marine. It
was love at first sight! Three weeks later, on April 27, 1945, they were married
in Yuma, Arizona. Theirs was a sixty year union which blessed them with nine
beautiful children, Les (Darla) Barlow, Joan Berg, Deanne (Lynn) Romrell,
Kay Goodrich (fiancé' Richard B. Stephens), Susan (Grant) Richardson,
Allen (Glenda) Barlow, Robbin (Gary) Bean, Brent (Cheryl) Barlow and Bruce
(Juli) Barlow. Shirley and Phil have 32 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren,
each one a treasured gift.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints. Through the years, she served as a Relief Society teacher, primary
teacher, visiting teacher and homemaking leader.
Shirley shared her many talents enthusiastically. An active
member of the American Legion Auxiliary, she was involved with the Idaho High
School Girls' State Program for over 30 years. In addition, she was very proud
of her association with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and the War Bonnet
Round-up. Gifted with an artistic touch, her decorative creations were eagerly
received by family, friends, and at social gatherings. She spent many hours
documenting family history for her descendents.
The legacy that Shirley leaves to us is reflected by this
passage in her own words: "Do a lot of laughing, loving, giving, and
spend time with those most important in your lives. In these troubled times,
that is all that really matters, isn't it? We love and cherish our large and
wonderful family and all our treasured friends."
May peace be with you --- Shirley, our love for you is eternal!
