HUGH HARTSHORN RIGBY, ID-- Sherman Hugh Hartshorn, 82 passed away July 4, 2009, at the Gardens Assisted Living in Rigby, Idaho, of a short illness related to congestive heart failure. He was born June 10, 1927, in Gillette, Wyoming, to Sherman Horatio Hartshorn and Elizabeth Mae Grund Hartshorn. They lived in Stroner, Wyoming, until Hugh was 9 years old. It was at this time that the family moved to Sandpoint, Idaho. From there they moved to Driggs, Idaho, in 1945. He attended grade schools in Stroner and Sandpoint and finished high school in Driggs in 1945. Hugh was a Private 1st Class infantryman in the US Army in World War II from 1945-1947. He was among the very first occupation troops to arrive in Japan after the bombings. He was stationed in Tokyo for a time as an Honor Guard for General McCarthur in 1945. Upon returning from World War II, Hugh was a member of the National Guard for 6 years with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was very proud to have served his country. It seems fitting that he passed away on July 4, 2009. He married Geraldine Hendrickson on September 4, 1959. They made their home in Idaho Falls. To this union came Curtis Glenn Hartshorn, Steven Ray Hartshorn, Carol Annette (Sam) Ribis and Deanna Lynn Hartshorn. Geraldine had two sons, Danny, Rulon, and a daughter, Diane Rogers, who were also part of this family. He drove truck for The Old Sugar Factory in Rigby and Idaho Falls for 13 years. He then worked for French’s/Pillsbury/Basic American Foods in Shelley, Idaho, until he retired in 1989. Hugh was a member of the Elks Lodge for 13 years. Hugh loved to fish, garden and walk in the Grand Teton Mall with many friends. He greatly enjoyed the social events at the Elk Creek Apartments with his friend, where he lived until the day before he passed away. Survivors include his children: Son, C. Glenn Hartshorn of Boise, ID; Son, Steven Hartshorn of Stern, NC Daughter, Carol Ribis of Owen Crossroads, AL; Daughter, Deanna Hartshorn of Newport News, VA; Son, Danny Hendrickson of Dallas, TX; Daughter, Diana Rogers of Idaho Falls; Sister, Shirley (LeRoy) Thornock of Pocatello, Idaho Sister, Grace Reece of Rigby, Idaho Brother, Richard (Janice) Hartshorn of Ione, Washington, Brother, David (Janice) Hartshorn of Driggs, Idaho Sister, Jane (Harold ) Beck of Lolo, Montana. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Geraldine. Graveside Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 10, 2009, at the Ammon Cemetery with David Hartshorn officiating. Military Rites will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and the Idaho Honor Guard. ---------------------------------------------------- Condolences received online:
