Scyril "Tex" Hamberlin

TEX HAMBERLIN IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Scyril Berwis “Tex” Hamberlin, 91, longtime resident of Idaho Falls, passed away Thursday March 2, 2006, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center surrounded by family. Scyril was born October 28, 1914, in Kelsey, Texas to Victor Carl and Effie Lavinia Irwin Hamberlin. At the age of 12 he “hobo-ed” from Texas to Idaho and fell in love with the country. He returned to Texas, but later came back to Idaho to make Idaho Falls his permanent home. Scyril and his brother Alonzo started a potato chip business called “Texas High Quality Chip.” It was located at West 16th Street in Idaho Falls. During World War II, Tex was drafted to serve in the coal mines in Price, Utah. In 1949, he joined the Idaho Falls Police Department, where he worked until retiring in 1980. Tex had a passion for the outdoor life: he loved fishing and hunting. His favorite fishing spot was down a rugged trail into the Teton River Canyon near Tetonia. His last trip down the canyon was in September last year. Tex shared his best catch-of-the-day with friends, family and neighbors. He also had a love of gardening and created a beautiful garden every year. During his police career, he particularly enjoyed working with the youth. In 1965, he was recognized for heroism by the American Legion for his efforts to save the life of a young man “from the swift flowing waters of the Snake River.” Scyril was married to Sybil McKnight October 31, 1936, and they were later divorced. In 1958, Scyril married Leatrice Lewis of Rexburg. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Scyril is preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and two sisters. He is survived by his wife Leatrice, six children: Larson (Betty) of Idaho Falls, Lewis (Joyce) of Rigby, Lynda Curtis (J) of Scottsdale, AZ, Nancy of Springville, UT, David (Jana) and Sid (Sheri) of Idaho Falls, nineteen grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren, a brother, Victor Carl, Jr. of Ogden, UT, a sister, Intha of Ogden, UT, and a sister, Zeila of Longview, TX. Family was important to Scyril; he greatly loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 6, 2006, at 12:00 Noon at the Idaho Falls LDS Central Stake 26th Ward Building at 2025 Jennie Lee Drive. Family will visit with friends Sunday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Wood Funeral home 273 North Ridge Avenue and at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the 26th Ward. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial Park under the direction of Wood Funeral Home. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Condolences sent online: Carol & William Cook (cacjr@cableone.net) Dear Sid and family: Your Dad was so much fun when he came by work. Your family has had more influence on my life than any other save my own. I will always remember the companionship and the life lessons learned from Tex and the stories with which he taught us how to live every time we were with him. I am blessed to have known him, to be able to share his table and the hundreds of hours being taught how to fish by Tex. In remembrance, Thayne Craig Ritchie (craig.ritchie@dougandrus.com) In case I don't get through the line to see you, I want you to know how sorry I am for your loss. I have had a lot of interaction with Tex in my life from the time I was in grade school, while I was working down town in high school and later when I moved into Tex's ward. Tex had a way of making you feel pretty special. As a life long friend of the three of you Nancy, Sid and David, I can see a lot of Tex in the three of you. My best goes out to the family and you, Leatrice, and my prayers are with you in this time of loss. Craig Ritchie Nick Curtis (john.curtis@ramstein.af.mil) We loved Tex and will miss him. He was a fun and entertaining man. I spent a couple of hours with him at a blood clinic awhile back and enjoyed every minute listening to his many stories. I also remember him bringing us many garden items when I lived on the Garrett Ranch up at Medicine Lodge. We enjoyed the produce and he loved the fishing. He will be missed by many. Thinking of you. Willa T.H.Carr M.D. (tcarr14479@aol.com) Tex was one of my most delightful patients. My only diagnosis of Tularemia. Missed the services as I am recovering from some surgery. A fine person, will be missed. Lisa Pardonnet (pardonla@id.doe.gov) Both Dad and I send our condolences, Tex was a wonderful man. I have many memories of him when he would visit with us while he was cleaning Amcor and when he would stop by the house with a fish or two to eat along with his many fish stories. Dad would always call him "Shot Gun Hamberlin" whenever we saw him mowing a lawn or driving down the street. Once again you are in our thoughts and prayers. Lynn & Lisa Pardonnet
