Ruth Esplin Rawlins, 104, of Idaho Falls, died July 20, 2013, at Lincoln Court Retirement Center. She missed her 105th birthday by just 22 days. She was under the care of OneSource Hospice.
Ruth was born August 11, 1908, in a log cabin home between Shelley and Basalt, Idaho, to Marion Esplin and Cleminta Church Esplin.
On June 9, 1932, she married John Weeding Rawlins in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Together they had two children. She worked along with John on their farm and with their herd of dairy cattle until moving to Idaho Falls in 1957. She and John resided in Goshen, Osgood and Idaho Falls. John passed away June 27, 1992.
Ruth received her early education in Shelley and graduated from high school in 1928. Ruth attended Ricks College, earning a standard teaching certificate, and later Brigham Young University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Education from BYU in 1960. She taught school in the Shelley School District for 20 years, retiring in 1973.
For the last 18 years Ruth has resided at Lincoln Court Retirement Center. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in teaching and leadership positions earlier in her life. Ruth served a mission with her husband at the Idaho Falls Family History Center. She filled her later years with art, sewing and needlework projects. Ruth had a great love for her family and the church.
She is survived by her son, John Kay (Barbara) Rawlins of Idaho Falls, ID, six grandchildren, Laurie, Richard, David, Carrie, Nathan and Mark, fifteen great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, a daughter, Carlene, her parents, three sisters, and three brothers.
The family expresses appreciation to the personnel at Lincoln Court and OneSource Hospice.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2013, at the Idaho Falls LDS Stake Center, 1155 First Street, with her grandson, Bishop Nathan Rawlins of Beaverton, Oregon, officiating. The family will visit with friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge, and from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in the Shelley-Hillcrest Cemetery.
