Ruth Marian Leslie Beyer, 100, of Idaho Falls, passed away on January 24, 2015, at Lily and Syringa Assisted Living.
She was born December 7, 1914, in McMinneville, Oregon to George McKay Leslie and Hallie Iona Fuller Leslie. She was born in the living quarters above the railway station where her father was station master for the Southern Pacific Railroad. This instilled a lifelong love of trains. She attended schools in Portland and graduated in 1932 from Tigard, Oregon High School. She played basketball and took part in various dance and theatrical productions. Following graduation, she attended Willamette University for one year.
On December 8, 1934, the day after her 20th birthday, she married Charles John Beyer in her parents’ living room in Tigard, Oregon. Together they had two children, Larry and Patsy, who made their family complete. One of the fondest memories is of Ruth reading the Oz books every evening with Larry sitting on one side and Patsy on the other. This instilled a lifelong love of reading for her children. Ruth worked for the Portland Oregonian newspaper and delivered milk to the dock workers after the war broke out. She could tell you exactly what she was doing when the radio announced the attack on Pearl Harbor on her 27th birthday.
The family moved to Southern California in 1942, settling in Altadena. During the war, Ruth and Patsy went door-to-door selling war bonds. She was active in the Parent-Teacher Association serving as president. Ruth and Chuck started a dental supply business in 1946 and worked together until their retirement. She then did volunteer work at the Huntington Memorial Hospital.
In 1965, they moved to San Juan Caspistrano, where they lived until Chuck’s death in 1992. Ruth moved to Idaho Falls in 1996 to be near her daughter.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and then later was a member of the Methodist Church. Ruth enjoyed square dancing, knitting, sewing, crewel work, gardening and reading.
