Harry LeRoy "Roy" Holmgren, 90, of Idaho Falls, passed away December 26, 2016, at the home of his daughter in Ammon.
Roy was born March 24, 1926, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Harry Joseph Holmgren and Louise Cook Holmgren. He grew up and attended schools in Idaho Falls and graduated from Idaho Falls High School.
During World War II, Roy served his country as a Corporal in the U. S. Army. He worked as a clerk typist and cared for mules on the battleship he was stationed on.
On September 21, 1949, he married Ida Nielsen in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. To this union were born four children, Sonja, Kerry, Kathy, and Jill. Roy and Ida worked together at City Floral & Garden Center, which he managed and owned with his parents, for more than 50 years. Ida passed away May 20, 2015.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Roy served faithfully in many ward and stake callings. Some of his most loved callings included serving in the Bishopric of the 23rd Ward, and as Stake Clerk and Stake Librarian in the Idaho Falls West Stake. He also served as an ordinance worker in the Idaho Falls Temple.
Roy played clarinet in the Idaho Falls Symphony for several years. He was active in the Idaho State Floral Association and the Idaho Falls Lions Club, and served as President of both organizations.
Roy enjoyed music, dancing, and growing and nurturing plants. He could fix nearly anything and loved to tinker with things around the house and shop. He loved spending time and working with his family at the floral shop, and spending time at the family cabin in Island Park. He also enjoyed skiing for many years. He loved hunting out west of town when he was younger.
Roy is survived by his four children, Sonja (Jeff) Jones, Kerry (Robyn) Holmgren, Kathy (Jerry) Ward, and Jill (Kevin) Steel, all of Idaho Falls; 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Louise Holmgren, his wife, Ida, and two great grandsons, Titan Olsen and Kameron Cook.
