Roy Hamilton Birkhead, 93, of Idaho Falls, passed away on November 12, 2024, at Lincoln Court Retirement Community.
Roy was born July 7, 1931, in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, to Fred Kellett Birkhead and Jane Wagstaffe Birkhead. He grew up and started schooling in Barnsley. In 1947, with his entire family, Roy emigrated to Utah. In 1950, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northern States Mission.
At the time of the Korean War, following his missionary service, Roy volunteered and began his service with the United States Marine Corps. Roy served 15 months in Korea.
He married Shirley Laree Barrus July 3, 1953, in the Idaho Falls Temple. They were blessed with one son, Russell Roy Birkhead. The love of his life, Shirley, passed away on June 1, 2014.
Roy was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed serving in the church and held various callings throughout his life.
Roy enjoyed fishing and the "big one" seldom got away. He was a bright spot in the lives of many. Roy was always willing to help where he could and brought a smile to everyone's face with his wit and kindness.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Rosalyn B. Sharp of Rexburg, ID.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, his wife, Shirley, and his son, Russell (aka Rusty).
Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 18, 2024, at Ammon Cemetery, 5226 East Sunnyside Road. Military honors will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and Marine Corps Honor Guard.
