Ross Leo Oviatt, 70, of Ammon, passed away April 10, 2013, at his home of cancer. He was under the care of his family and Hearts for Hospice.
Ross was born April 27, 1942, in Claresholm, Alberta, Canada, to Clifford Leo Oviatt and Marjorie Leona Jones Oviatt. He grew up and attended public schools in Canada. He continued his education at the Bryan College of Court Reporting in Los Angeles, California.
On August 15, 1964, he married Martha Ann “Marty” Smith in Corpus Christi, Texas. Their marriage was solemnized three days later, August 18, 1964, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They made their home in Shelley, Idaho, where they raised their three children, Lance, Jared, and Julie. In 1973 Ross took a position as the Official Court Reporter for the Seventh Judicial District working with Judge Boyd Thomas. He retired in 2005, having reported for four district judges. He also managed Eastern Idaho Court Reporters, working with several freelance reporters throughout his career.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ross served faithfully in various stake and ward callings over the years. His recent service included a Church service mission at the LDS Employment Center, where he served with Marty, and in the Special Needs Adult Primary Program.
Ross served on the School Board of the Shelley School District. He was instrumental in establishing licensing for Court Reporters in the State of Idaho and served on the State CSR Board for many years. He was also active in the Idaho Court Reporters Association and served as its President several times. A devoted husband and father, Ross loved family history, reading, traveling, and being with his family.
Ross is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Marty Oviatt of Ammon,
Son, Lance (Charla) Oviatt of Afton, WY,
Son, Jared (Jenna) Oviatt of Millfield, OH;
Daughter, Julie (Marty) Gurr of Laguna Niguel, CA;
Three brothers, Mark, Ira, and Paul, and
three sisters, Ona, Jenni, and Maggie.
9 Grandchildren: John, Wendell, Matthew, Laura, Gwen, Camille, Russell, Shelby, and Zoe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Thomas.
Funeral Services will be held at 12 Noon Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at the Ammon LDS 21st Ward, 4030 John Adams Parkway, with Bishop Jeff Jones officiating. The family will visit with friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 South Ammon Road, and from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery.
