One week later, Bob reported for active duty with the U.S. Army, serving in the 90th Field Artillery during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge in 1952. After returning from Korea, Bob attended the National Diesel Mechanic School in southern California. After graduating, Bob, Bonnie and their young family moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they lived for 45 years. Bob worked as a reactor operator at the Idaho National Laboratory in the Arco desert.
Bob enjoyed working with youth and held many callings in the LDS Church, including serving as a home teacher, Webelos leader, Sunday School teacher, and as a member of the Sunday School presidency. Bob served three Church missions at the Idaho Falls LDS Bishop's Storehouse. In 1996-1997, Bob served a mission with his wife at the LDS Employment Office in Salt Lake City.
