DR. ROBERT G. PAHL IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Dr. Robert George Pahl, 51, of Idaho Falls, died May 28, 2004, at his home. Bob was born July 4, 1952, in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, the son of Robert George Pahl, Sr. and Elizabeth Jane Hastie Pahl. He graduated from Wyoming Area High School in 1970. He continued his education at Wilkes College, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in 1974. In 1983, he obtained his doctorate in Materials Science from Northwestern University. Bob married Mary Barbara Hackl April 12, 1980. After receiving his Ph.D. from Northwestern in 1983, Dr. Pahl accepted a position with Argonne National Laboratory in Idaho Falls as a materials scientist. He soon became an internationally recognized expert in the development of nuclear reactor fuel. He led a team of scientists and engineers in the development of nuclear fuel that was irradiated to the highest exposure ever achieved by any type of nuclear fuel. Dr. Pahl was also an excellent and experienced mentor for his younger colleagues at the Laboratory. More recently he had established himself as one of the nation’s experts in the safe storage and handling of spent nuclear fuel. Bob greatly enjoyed outdoor activities, especially with his family and his friends. He particularly enjoyed hunting and fishing since his days growing up in Pennsylvania. Surviving are: Daughter: Maria Angelica Pahl, Idaho Falls, ID Son: Alex Lee Pahl, Idaho Falls, ID Sister: Susan Allan, Kingston, PA Niece: Christine Allan, Kingston, PA Niece: Saray Allan, Philadelphia, PA Nephew: Ted Allan, Jr., Kingston, PA Friend: Linda Hansen, Pocatello, ID He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Daniel Kiho Pahl. Memorial Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 North Ridge Avenue, with Pastor Sam Petitfils of Christ Community Church officiating. The family will visit with friends on Thursday for one hour prior to the services at Wood Funeral Home.
