Robert Alan “Bob” Nelson, 68, of Shelley, passed away February 14, 2015, at his home of heart failure.
Bob was born August 20, 1946, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Robert Thomas Nelson and Lavenda Fox Nelson. He grew up in Mud Lake, Idaho Falls, and Rigby, where he attended schools. He served as a Lance Corporal in the U. S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
On August 5, 1966, he married Carolyn Willis in Idaho Falls, Idaho. To this union were born two children, Keri and Robert. Bobby and Carolyn made their home in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina, Springfield, Oregon, Shoshoni, Wyoming, Marcola, Oregon, and eventually settled in Shelley, Idaho. Bob was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, then later worked in the oil fields and as a bus driver for Teton Stage Lines.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Elks Lodge, VFW, and was active in the neighborhood watch program. He served with the volunteer fire department in Shoshoni, Wyoming. Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, and telling jokes.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Carolyn Nelson of Shelley, ID;
daughter, Keri (Jeff) Sammons of Shelley, ID,
son, Robert D. (Debbra) Nelson of Idaho Falls, ID;
brother, Mike (Vicki) McMurtrey of Evanston, WY;
sister, Betty Jean Dodds of Mountain Home, ID;
eight grandchildren Brittany Vogel, Thomas Summerbell, Bobby Nelson, Brandy Sammons, Rivers Nelson, April Nelson, Brooke Sammons, and Jeffrey Sammons.
four great grandchildren, Jaydenlynn Rose Vogel and Logan Kody Vogel, Jade Bondley and Summer Bondley.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Linda Viers, Teri Friedline, and Kathy Schambers.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2015, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 North Ridge Avenue. The family will visit with friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., both at Wood Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Ucon Cemetery. Military Rites will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team.
