Robert Frederick Crowton, 89, of Idaho Falls, passed away quietly on January 15, 2013 at Idaho Falls, ID. Bob was born November 8, 1923, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Burt Steadman Crowton and Sarah Edna Simonds Crowton. He graduated from Salt Lake South High School, attended Utah State University, University of Colorado and earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Idaho. He married the love of his life, Marjorie Elaine Taylor, on February 19, 1943 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Bob and Marge made their home in Blackfoot and moved to Idaho Falls in 1963, where they raised their three children. Like many of the greatest generation, Bob served our country by joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943. He graduated from the first and only Special Officers Candidate School (SOCS) in 1944 at Camp Lejeune, NC. Receiving his officer's commission, Bob served combat in the Pacific Theater with Company G, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Star and Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism as a Platoon Leader in action against the enemy forces on May 5, 1945, Okinawa, Japan. While attending college, Bob spent his summers in Northern Idaho, working for the U.S. Forest Service as a solitary fire lookout. After returning from the war, he managed Kugler's Jewelers in Idaho Falls and Blackfoot. In 1958, Bob accepted a position with Westinghouse Electric Corporation and worked as a personnel manager until retirement in 1989. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he served in a variety of callings, including Scout Master (every scout earned their Eagle Award under his leadership), Stake Employment Specialist, and at the time of death, he was serving as a High Priest Group Assistant. Bob was also a member of the Elks Club, Kiwanis, and the Chamber of Commerce. After retirement, Bob volunteered as a math tutor for the Bonneville County prison work release program and was recognized as the Eastern Idaho Technical College Volunteer Tutor of the Year 1995-1996. He enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing, and nearly any outdoor activity but Bob especially enjoyed spending time, traveling and dancing with his sweetheart, Marge, and supporting his children and grandchildren's endeavors. Survivors include: Daughter: Ann Crowton (Bruce) Mulkey, Salmon ID Daughter: Debra Crowton (David) Sadler of Idaho Falls, ID Son: Robert T. (Synthia) Crowton, Idaho Falls, ID Six Grandchildren: Dan L. (Charlotte) Mulkey, J. D. Mulkey, Justin D. Sadler, Nicolette A. Crowton, Dustin (Macee) Crowton and Cortlin R. Crowton He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie, of 66 years; a brother, Doug and a sister, Beverly. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at the Idaho Falls LDS 28th Ward, 1165 Azalea Drive, with Bishop Mark Argyle officiating. The family will visit with friends Monday, January 21, 2013, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge, and Friday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Fielding Memorial Park with full military rites. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Children's Cancer Research Fund, Donation Processing Center, P.O. Box 006, Albert Lea, MN 56007-8006 or Primary Children's Medical Center, P.O. Box 58249, Salt Lake City, UT 84158-0249.
