Richard E.J. Whitman

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Richard Elzie J. Whitman, age 77, who passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024, at Eagle Rock Health and Rehabilitation of Cascadia.

Richard was born on March 8, 1947, to James Leroy Jennings (Rufus Byrd Whitman) and Evelyn Virginia Likes in Las Vegas, Nevada. Shortly after, his family relocated to Oregon and later to Idaho, where Richard spent most of his childhood alongside his three brothers and two sisters.

Richard married his cherished wife Shirley Ann Shipley in 1978, and they remained together until her passing in April 2008.

Throughout his life, Richard lived in various places, including Idaho Falls, Reno, and Battle Mountain, Nevada, where he worked diligently in the trucking and mining industry.

Richard is survived by his brothers, Harold Whitman (Debbie) of Boise, ID; and Clarence Whitman (Linda) of Shelley, ID.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Shirley Ann Whitman of Idaho Falls; his brother, William (Billy) Gorden High of Idaho Falls, ID; and his sisters, Mary Elizabeth Whitman Colvin of Idaho Falls, ID, and DaLores "De" LaVon Haley-Berggren of Idaho Falls; his nephews, Jody (Joe) and Jason Colvin of Idaho Falls, ID; and grandson, Joshua who we hold in our memories. Richard will be laid to rest April 5, 2025 at the Ammon Cemetery. A small celebration of life will be held with close family and friends to honor and remember the life of a truly remarkable man.
