Richard Lester Rhodes, 93, of Ammon, passed away January 20, 2017, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. Richard was born March 28, 1923, in Zanesville, Ohio, to Samuel C. Rhodes and Mabel Jenkins Rhodes. He grew up and attended schools in Zanesville and graduated from Zanesville High School. He also attended The University of Denver, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Richard proudly served his country in the U.S. Army’s 29th Infantry Division during World War II and was awarded two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts for his heroic actions during the liberation of France. In 1973, he married Olga Maria Solwij in the Dominican Republic. Richard and Olga made their home in Corpus Christi, Texas, for more than twenty years, where Richard worked as a sales representative in the oil industry. He later worked in land management for oil companies. They moved to Ammon in 1999 where Richard and Olga retired. Richard enjoyed traveling, reading, spending time with his grandchildren, and watching FOX News. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Olga Rhodes of Ammon, ID; daughter, Sally Anne (Lt. Col. Jeffery Guy) Carlton of Great Falls, MT; grandchildren, Ella Candace Carlton and Madeline Aylish Carlton, and many other grandchildren and great grandchildren; three sons, Richard Lester Rhodes II, Peter Randolph Rhodes, and Ronald Rhodes. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Rhoda Frank, and brother-in-law, Lui Frank. Burial with military honors will be in the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, at 10:00 a.m. on April 17, 2017.
