Richard Payne

Click Here To View Memorial Video Our loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather, Richard Ivan Payne returned to live with his loving Heavenly Father on December 29, 2014. He died at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was 78 years old. Dad was born November 5, 1936, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Stanley Payne and Alda Talbot Payne. He was the second of three children born to Stanley and Alda. Stanley passed away when Dad was almost 6, and Alda married Fred William Colson Sr. three years later. Fred brought along three daughters, and together, they had two more sons. Dad spent most of his life in the Idaho Falls area, and graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1954. He married Jerrie Louise Henderson June 20, 1957, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They moved out to Lincoln, where they have lived since Christmas of 1957, with a brief sojourn in Salt Lake City for schooling. They were blessed with three daughters, Debi, Sara and Teresa. Although Dad had no sons, he did not need any to help with all the work around the house. He taught his girls to mow, buck hay, and do any of the chores that needed to be done. He loved watching them play ball, and went to all their games. Dad worked with Fred in the sign business, for a while, and then decided to take courses in computer programming. He moved his little family to Salt Lake to earn his degree, and then back they came to Idaho Falls. He worked for Rogers Brothers, which was later Basic American Foods, for many years as a programmer, and began commuting to work in the late 1980's to Vacaville, California, to avoid moving there permanently. Dad loved to go to the family cabin at Mack's Inn, and particularly enjoyed boating with his kids. He taught many neighborhood children to water-ski, and would drive his boat all day long. He loved to laugh, and his whooping cackle could be heard reverberating from all around! He also loved to sing, and sang for years in a male quartet with Milo, Tom and Sheryl. Dad had the very best time in 1978 when his first grandbaby, Angi, was born. He loved to have her around and give her rides on the lawnmower. Seven more grandchildren came along, and he loved being around all of them! Even better were the seven greats that have come along now. They loved going to Papa Richard's house! Everyone loved stealing his cane and he loved having it stolen. Dad served in many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and always attended wards in Lincoln. He was in charge of the firewood project for many years, and loved to spend a week working in the ward corn fields. He served as Stake Finance Clerk under many different Stake Presidents, and loved being as helpful as possible to everyone. Richard is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jerrie of Idaho Falls, daughters, Debi (Kevin) Davis of Idaho Falls; Sara (Brent) Swapp of Ridgefield, WA; and Teresa (Jeff) Nielson of Syracuse, UT. Eight grandchildren: Angi (Nathan) Lott, Brandon (Anna) Davis, and Casey Davis of Idaho Falls. Chase, Blake & Arianne Swapp of Ridgefield, WA; Skye & Katy Nielson of Syracuse, UT.
