Richard James Hays

Richard "Dick" James Hays, 88, of Idaho Falls, passed away August 14, 2026, at the Gables of Ammon, under the compassionate care of Aspen Home Health & Hospice.

Dick was born November 14, 1937, in Spokane, Washington, to James R. Hays and Hazel Bell Holsten Hays. He grew up in Idaho Falls, where he attended local schools and graduated from Idaho Falls High School. He later earned a Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture from the University of Idaho – a field that matched his lifelong love of land, animals, and the outdoors.

Dick made his home in Osgood where he farmed for decades. Farming wasn't just his work, it was his identity. He knew the land like an old friend and poured his life into it. In addition to his home farm, Dick owned and worked land in Antelope Flats, Idaho – the family's dry farm. That land was a source of pride, history, and hard work, and he carried deep respect for the generations who built it and the seasons that shaped it. His curiosity and sense of adventure eventually took him all the way to Paraguay, South America, where he spent time ranching and experiencing a completely different way of life.

Dick lived with enthusiasm and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He loved snowmobiling in the winter and boating on the Snake River in the summer. He had a passion for antique cars and trucks, always hunting for the next treasure. Whether it was a rare vehicle, an odd trinket from an antique store, or something unusual he found on his travels, Dick had a knack for discovering things that were unique, quirky, and full of character – just like him.

He was a member of the Civitans and volunteered for the Special Olympics. He was a competitive trap shooter with a steady hand and a sharp eye. He loved hunting, exploring, and spending time in wide open spaces. He was also known for his unforgettable sense of humor and his collection of "crazy animals" – pets that were quirky, unusual, and always loved.

Above all, Dick was deeply devoted to his family. He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Howard of Denver, CO and Jennifer (John) O'Connor of Missoula, MT; his sister, Ann (Gale) Schenk of Ashton, ID; and his brother, Jess (Christine) Hays of Idaho Falls, ID; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Charlotte Hays.

He will miss his daily trips to the North Highway Cafe.
