Richard “Dick” Jack Ackerman, 83, of Idaho Falls, passed away September 15, 2014, at his home. He was under the care of Teton Home Health and Hospice Services.
Dick was born June 11, 1931, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Jack Ackerman and Mary Gertrude O’Reno.
He married the love of his life, Peggy Holden Ackerman on July 3, 1948, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. They had two daughters, Brenda and Debbie, and a son, Rick. Dick worked for the Idaho Falls Police Department for 28 years, serving as a patrolman, sergeant, and a detective. He was elected Bonneville County Sheriff and held that position for 12 years. After he retired, Dick and Peggy managed the campground at Heise Hot Springs for many years. He was deputized by the Jefferson County Sheriff to help maintain “law and order” at the campground. In the winters, Dick and Peggy were snowbirds in Yuma, Arizona.
Dick enjoyed golfing, camping, snow machining, and water and snow skiing. He was a member of the Pine Basin and Kelly Canyon Ski Patrols. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #1087 where he served as Exalted Ruler, the Yuma Moose Lodge, and Idaho Falls Eagles.
Dick is survived by
daughter, Brenda (John) St. Clair;
daughter, Debbie (Ray Steele) Sanders;
son, Rick (Tina) Ackerman;
sister-in-law, Norma Ackerman;
brother-in-law, James Sato;
companion, Bobbie Wilson;
9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, step-children, and step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Ackerman; mother, Mary Gertrude O'Reno; wife of 56 years, Peggy Ackerman; granddaughter, Aimee Sue Stoddard; sister, Darlene Sato; brother, Ron Ackerman.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Avenue, with Reverend Ron Derrick officiating. The family will visit with friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, and one hour prior to services on Saturday, both times at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery in Idaho Falls. Family and friends will gather at Eagles Lodge for a celebration of his life after the burial.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Bonneville County Search and Rescue, Attn: Wendy, 605 N. Capital, Idaho Falls, ID 83402.
