Rex Atkin Burningham, 76, recently of Idaho Falls, passed away from Alzheimer's Disease on September 8, 2024, at his home. He had been under the care of his wife, and at the time of death was also attended by his sons.
Rex was born on May 10, 1948, in Salt Lake City, Utah to David Burningham and Maxine Atkin Burningham. He grew up and attended schools in Salt Lake and graduated from Highland High School in 1966. He also attended the University of Utah where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Biology. After a short time researching with the U of U Ornithology Department, Rex took over his father's painting company, eventually becoming a painting contractor. He became one of the sought-after painters in Salt Lake. Rex developed deep friendships with many of his clients, eventually becoming a construction consultant for some of them.
Rex married Mary Kathleen "Kati" Burningham on March 25, 1970, in Salt Lake City. Rex and Kati raised their family in Sandy, Utah. When both sons left Utah, Rex and Kati moved to Idaho Falls in 2015 to be nearer one of their sons. They traveled often to California, spending several winters in Ojai and Newport Beach to be near their other son. Rex was a family man with a zest for the outdoors. He took his family on endless adventures boating, horseback riding, hiking, and four-wheeling throughout Utah and surrounding states. His legacy for adventure lives on in both sons.
Rex is survived by his wife, Kati Burningham of Ammon, ID; son, James Rex "JR" (Tess) of Mission Viejo, CA, and their sons, Tristan Rex Burningham and Lance Henry Burningham; son, Michael David "Mike" (Eileen) of Idaho Falls and their children, Gavin Luciano Burningham, Giuliana Evolet Burningham, and Emmett Lorenzo Burningham; sister, Jorja (Rodney) Lloyd of Herriman, UT; brothers-in-law Richard F Volker (Sue) of Flint, TX, and Hank Volker of Holladay, UT; sister-in-law, Jill McGee (Gary) of Cottonwood Heights, UT; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents David and Maxine, his brother David Craig Burningham and his brother's wife, Dixie Burningham.
The family would like to thank Symbii Hospice and their wonderful nurse Nicole Miles for her loving attention and help with Rex during the last few months of his life.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service that will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Day Dairy Barn, 1166 E. Pioneer Road, Draper, UT.
A Memorial in Idaho Falls will be held at the Burningham home for close personal friends. Date and time to be announced.
