Raymond “Red” W. Squires, 93, of Idaho Falls, passed away at a local care facility on January 23, 2013, while recovering from a broken hip. Ray was born September 22, 1919, in Iowa, to Kenneth Squires and Nevada Hall Squires. He grew up in Iowa and was a farm boy at heart. He attended Simpson College and received his Bachelor’s Degree. He was a proud member of the U. S. Army Air Corps and served on the island base of Tinian during World War II, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Ray had many fond memories of his time on Tinian and cherished the many friends and memories he made there. He attended several of his bomber wing reunions over the years. He married Margaret Jane Fish April 14, 1947, in Louisville, Kentucky. They had two children, Beverly and Robert. They started out their married life in southern Indiana, where Ray worked as a shift supervisor at Seagram’s distillery. In 1956 they moved their young family to Idaho Falls to join the work force at the INL site, where he worked as a shift supervisor and in planning and control for Phillips and then Argonne. He enjoyed the good friends he met at work. Jane passed away in 1996. Ray married Aleene Gibson in May 1999 and welcomed her extended family as his own. Aleene passed away in 2009. Ray loved the outdoors and the many spectacular recreational activities to be enjoyed in this beautiful area. He spent much time hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and camping with his family near Island Park and Mesa Falls. There wasn’t a bad road known to Ray and his family. After retiring from the site, Ray spent many winters in Arizona enjoying the sun, warmth and good friendship of all he encountered. In his later years Ray’s favorite past times included going out for a Mexican dinner or a lazy Sunday afternoon steak dinner surrounded by his family. Ray is survived by his Daughter, Beverly (Paul) Thomas of Idaho Falls, ID; Son, Robert R. (Teresa) Squires of Lakeview, OR; Brother, Ceabern Squires of Brainerd, MN; Brother, Glenn Squires of Greenville, TX; Brother, Stan (Betty) Squires of Ackley, Iowa; 3 grandchildren, Robyn (John) Sanders, Karen Borchert, andJonathan Squires of Oregon; and 3 Great Grandchildren, Rachel, Cassidy and Addison Sanders.
