Phyllis Barber

Our mother and grandmother, Mary Phyllis Barber, has passed from one loving family to the next. On January 11, 2017, at a rich and joyfully-lived age of 94, she passed away in her home, under the tender care of her family. Phyllis was born November 5, 1922, in Teton, Idaho, to Fremont and Golda M. Richman Fullmer. She grew up in Sugar City and went to school there. She attended Ricks College in Rexburg and beauty school in Idaho Falls. Phyllis discovered a handsome young man that she described in her journal as "swell" and "quite a looker." His nickname was Butch, but we know him as Dad. Phyllis and Lowell D. Barber dated and then were married October 11, 1941, at her parent's home in Salem, Idaho. They had only been married for ten days when Lowell left to serve his country in the US Army. After Lowell's service in World War II, they lived in Rexburg and then Idaho Falls. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan, Utah, LDS Temple, May 18, 1944. They were delighted to be the parents of Sherrie, Cathy, Greg, and Layne. Phyllis served in many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including stake and ward Relief Society and Primary President. She and Lowell served two full-time missions, one in West Virginia and the other in the Idaho Falls Temple Visitor Center. She was a seamstress, an award-winning ballroom dancer, a violinist, an artist, a fisher-woman, an opal miner, and a snowbird. She loved to crochet, work ceramics, take road trips – avoiding anything steep or scary due to a childhood fear instilled by her father – and to play games with family and snowbird friends. She treasured taking her grandkids camping and on Grandparent trips. Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Sherrie Dee (Larry) Quinn of St. Helens, OR, sons: Greg F (Carol) Barber of Spanish Fork, UT and Layne L (Tamara) Barber of Ammon, ID; sisters: Valene Withers and Rhea Schroeder of Rexburg, ID; 16 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lowell; daughter, Cathy; brothers, Garin F. and Bernel R. Fullmer; great-grandchildren, Erika and Ryan Cluff; and brothers-in-law, Bert Withers and Neil Schroeder. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017 in the Idaho Falls LDS South Stake Center, 2051 S. Emerson, with Bishop Todd Hillam officiating. Family viewing will be from 9:00-10:00 a.m. and friends will be welcomed from 10:00-10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Sugar City Cemetery. We are grateful to Teton Home Health and Hospice for their tender care. As Phyllis always said, "Thanks a Million!"
