P. C. BOWEN
IDAHO FALLS, ID - Phelps Charles Bowen, Jr., 84, of Spencer,
Idaho passed away January 4, 2005 in Idaho Falls.
He was born October 11, 1920 to Phelps Charles Bowen,
Sr. and Angelina Fernandez Bowen in Richland Center, Wisconsin. He attended
Catholic School in San Antonio, Texas, until 6th grade, and graduated
from Fort Sam Houston High School in San Antonio, where he excelled in
track and field and played baseball.
He joined the service in 1939, and he was a decorated
pilot in the Asian Pacific Campaign while serving in the Army Air Corp
during World War II. After returning from the war he trained other pilots
until his honorable discharge in 1946.
He married Edith Elizabeth Calonge from Ashton, on September
27, 1942, in Sedalia, Missouri.
Charles and Edith farmed in Wisconsin and later in Idaho. In 1960, he
took a job at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station where he worked until
he retired in 1979.
He also drove school bus, and reported for the U.S. Weather
Service. He was currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Mud
Lake Telephone Co-op and is the Mayor of Spencer.
He is a member of the Community Baptist Church in Dubois
where he served on the Board.
He and his wife enjoyed hunting and fishing (especially
in Alaska), watching old western movies, and having family and friends
visit them in Spencer. Over the past 47 years one of his favorite past
times was following his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren
in their school activities.
He is survived by his wife, Edith of Spencer; his children,
Pat (Peggy) Bowen of Whittier, Alaska, Mary (Blaine) Grover of Dubois,
Irma (Rod) Lamb of Anchorage, Alaska, Todd (Lori) Bowen of Pollock, Idaho;
14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Bowen of
San Antonio, Texas and George Bowen of Houston, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter,
Angela Black.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January
7, 2005, at the Dubois Community Baptist Church with Pastor Warren Cuppy
officiating. The family will visit with friends from 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursday,
January 6 at Wood Funeral Home (273 N. Ridge) and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45
p.m. on Friday at the church.
