Patrice Elizabeth (Barker) Winstead

Patrice Elizabeth Winstead, 72, of Ammon, Idaho, passed away December 13, 2024, peacefully at home, at the end of a full and happy life.

Patrice was born to Lt. Colonel Arthur Wilson Barker and Clarine Lorraine Ellingson Barker on June 12, 1952, in Ames, Iowa, and was the youngest of three children.

Patrice grew up an “Army Brat,” moving many times during her childhood within the United States and overseas. She graduated from Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia, in 1970. She completed her Bachelor of Music Education with a Major in Vocal Performance at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, in 1974.

While at East Carolina University, she met and married her eternal companion, Roy Winstead. They were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on August 14, 1973, and made their home in North Carolina, where they began their family of four beautiful children.

In 1987, the family moved to Laie, Hawaii, where Roy was a professor at Brigham Young University-Hawaii. Hawaii quickly became a very special place for Patrice. She loved everything about the culture and beauty of the Islands. Patrice completed her Elementary Education Degree at BYU-H and taught in several public schools — she loved being a teacher! When she retired from public school teaching, she became an academic advisor at BYU-H, where she loved the continued connections she made with the students there.

In 2012, Patrice and Roy retired and moved to Bothell, Washington, to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

In 2016, they moved to Tucson, Arizona, to be close to their eldest son, their grandchildren, and Patrice’s sister and brother-in-law. Tucson also quickly became a special place for Patrice. She loved the vast desert beauty and treasured the time she was able to live near her sister again.

In July 2023, Patrice and Roy moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, after Patrice was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease so they could be close to their daughter and son-in-law.

Patrice was a very proud grandma of seven grandsons and three granddaughters.

Our beloved Patrice was preceded in death by her parents, Lt. Colonel Arthur Wilson Barker and Clarine Lorraine Ellingson Barker; her elder sister, Christine Ann Widman; and her brother-in-law, Dennis Cooper Widman.

Patrice is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Roy Winstead; her four children: Seth (Jana) Winstead of Tucson, AZ; Claire (Chris) Jolley of Idaho Falls, ID; Peter Winstead of Manhattan, NY; Spencer (Christina) Winstead of Rochester, WA; her ten grandchildren; and her elder brother, Keith (Casey) Barker of Arlington, WA.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Aspen Home Health & Hospice for their loving care, especially to Katelyn and Britney, as well as a special thank-you to Wood Funeral Home for their care and tenderness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 20, 2024, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road in Ammon, Idaho. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Burial will be in the Ammon Cemetery.
